Local Herb Directory

Local Herb Directory

Four Southeast Asian herbs at the centre of our 18 July local herb workshop — traditional use, current evidence, and how each is prepared. This directory is a reference guide, not a shop: some of these herbs are available as packaged teas, others are shared as part of our workshops and community sessions.

Leea Indica

Bandicoot Berry · Memali · 岩陀 (Huǒ tǒng shù)

A cooling everyday tea from a shrub common in Singapore's parks and community gardens — traditionally used for digestion, fevers, wound care, and postpartum recovery.

Black Face General

Strobilanthes crispa · Pecah Beling · 黑面将军 (Hēi miàn jiāngjūn)

A bitter, cooling Malay garden herb traditionally used as a diuretic and 'detoxifying' tonic to support urinary flow and liver function.

South African Bitter Leaf

Vernonia amygdalina · Bitter Leaf · 南非叶 (Nán fēi yè)

One of West Africa's most important bitter tonic herbs — traditionally used to stimulate digestion, bile flow, and liver function.

Hong Tian Wu

Alternanthera sessilis 'Red' · Red Carpet Weed · 红田乌 (Hóng tián wū)

A reddish-stemmed garden herb valued in TCM as a blood-nourishing tonic and in Ayurveda for eye health and vision support.
